Accused dentist's court appearance canceled

Dec 29, 2010

A U.S. District Court hearing for Wareham dentist Steven Miller, who was arrested this month for distributing controlled substances in exchange for sexual favors, was canceled Wednesday.

The hearing, held in Boston, was called to address Miller’s ability to pay for his own attorney. His lawyer, Lenore Glaser, filed a motion to continue the hearing until “a date in the end of January,” on the grounds that Miller had decided to retain her as his lawyer.

“As the issue of representation is resolved, both parties agree that there are no issues presently pending before the court, and a status conference is not necessary at this time,” Glaser wrote in her motion.

Miller’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 23 at the U.S. District Court in Boston.

Miller worked as a dentist in Wareham prior to his arrest on December 14. He was released from jail on $10,000 cash bail following a December 15 detention hearing.

At his initial court appearance on December 14, Miller filed a financial affidavit with the court, and requested that he be provided with a court-appointed (and court-paid) attorney.  The court appointed Glaser to represent him on a provisional basis, pending the review of his eligibility for appointed counsel.

At Miller’s detention hearing on December 15, the court determined that Miller did not qualify for a court-appointed attorney, and would have to retain his own counsel.

Although Miller retained Glaser as an attorney on December 17, Glaser did not file the motion until the day before Wednesday's hearing.
