Adelaide “Ida” (Gomes) Cardoza, 88, of New Bedford, formerly of Wareham, died July 23 in St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford. She was the widow of the late Raymond “Billy” Cardoza and the daughter of the late Vincent and Adelaide (Freitas) Gomes.

She was born in New Bedford and lived in Wareham for 63 years before moving back to New Bedford.

Cardoza worked as an assembler for May Optical in Marion for several years before retiring.

Ida was proud of her Cape Verdean heritage and proudly relayed stories of growing up in the New Bedford Cape Verdean community. As a child, she loved to explore her neighborhood and often made friends with elderly neighbors in need of someone to run an errand for them. She valued and respected her family and she treasured the life-long friendships she made in the neighborhood. She told many stories of how she enjoyed the activity and music along Acushnet Avenue. Moving to Wareham taught her to enjoy a slower life-style. She learned how to pick cranberries, sit under the tree and read a good book, and she continued to help elderly neighbors. Ida never fully left New Bedford, she returned regularly for meetings with the Woman’s Club and thoroughly enjoyed going to the Cape Verdean Vet’s Hall for Cape Verdean music and dancing.

Survivors include two daughters, Diann Haynes of New Bedford and Joyce A. Cardoza of Wareham; a sister, Anna Rose of Methuen; a brother, Joseph Lopes of Connecticut; two grandchildren, Steven Haynes and his wife Cheryl, Rae-Asia Haynes; two great-grandchildren, Jared and Marley Haynes. She was the sister to the late Maria Correia.

Her funeral will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
