Apr 20, 2011

An alleged bank robber was arrested on April 19 after he was found hiding out in the Silver Lake Motel on Cranberry Highway.

Robert Smith III, 38, of 51 Cliff Road in Buzzards Bay was found at approximately 9 p.m. when the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Swat team searched room 127 of the motel. Wareham Police had received intelligence that the suspect, wanted in connection to an April 14 New Bedford Sovereign Bank robbery, was staying there.

Smith was charged with armed robbery and intimidation to steal from a depository and a violation of an abuse prevention order. He is believed to be a suspect in other area crimes, according to police.

Smith was held on $5,000 cash bail at the Wareham police station and later transported to New Bedford for arraignment.
