Americana Café closing after purchase by other restaurant

Feb 15, 2023

The Americana Café at 208R Main St. is closing for good after being purchased by another Main Street restaurant, the Scarlet Rose Bistro.

The Café announced its closure in a Wednesday, Feb. 15 Facebook post.

“The decision was not made lightly,” the post read. “Extremely difficult. We met so many great people that we now call friends. Thank you for the support.”

When reached for comment by Wareham Week, a representative of the Americana Café said that the restaurant closed because the owners are “headed in different directions.”

“It’s been a good run,” the Americana said in a statement. “Simple as that.”

Connie Kjelgaard, who owns the Scarlet Rose Bistro with her husband Michael, said that the Bistro purchased the Americana Café to “take over” its kitchen.

The Americana kitchen’s ventilation system allows it to accommodate a variety of cooking techniques, such as grilling.

“We were limited with our kitchen,” Kjelgaard said.

The Americana Café opened in June 2016 under the ownership of chef Peter Ward and manager Karen Moore. Although Ward was trained by a French chef, his restaurant lived up to its name, serving American fare.

Scarlet Rose Bistro opened in November 2022 with an eclectic global menu.

In its post, the Americana Café encouraged those with outstanding gift cards to message the restaurant on Facebook.
