Areas reopen for shellfishing

May 29, 2013

The state Division of Marine Fisheries has allowed all of the areas closed to shellfishing due to the May 7 sewer spill at Onset Pier to reopen.

The spill occurred after an issue with the town's sewer system caused sewage to overflow into a nearby storm drain. Areas in both Onset Bay and Buttermilk Bay were forced to close to shellfishing.

The Division of Marine Fisheries' announcement does not apply to "rainfall management areas," which close and reopen to shellfishing based on precipitation.
