Baptiste honored for continued commitment to veterans

As Grand Marshal of the 2014’s Veteran’s Day Parade and celebrations in Wareham, Steve Baptiste had a list of responsibilities, but as usual, he went above and beyond.

“He gave us use of the restaurant (Pier View Restaurant in Onset, which Baptiste owns), he donated food to the Veteran’s Luncheon, he gave a financial donation — none of that is required,” said Sharon Boyer, president of the Wareham Veteran’s Day Celebration Committee. “That was all done by his graciousness to us.”

On Tuesday morning, members of the committee were on hand at the Pier View Restaurant to honor Baptiste, who has been long known for his annual recognition of veterans and continued community support.

A member of the 82nd Airborne, Baptiste was in the military for three years in addition to his time as a paratrooper and was employed by the Wareham Police Department for 19 years, retiring as as a Lieutenant.

“Not only has he had us for a lot of breakfasts out here, but he’s made a lot of monetary contributions, as well,” said Bob White, a member of the committee.

White said honoring Baptiste was the beginning of the committee’s process of saying “thank you” to the various individuals who contribute to the success is the Veteran’s Day celebrations.

“It feels great (to be honored),” said Baptiste, who was also chosen as the guest speaker at January 19’s Martin Luther King Community Breakfast at the Boys and Girls Club for his community service. “I put a lot on my plate. It's been one thing after another.”
