Behind the scenes of the Community Associates' clam bake

Jul 25, 2011

More than 180 people were in attendance at the Community Associates' scholarship clam bake. The annual event always draws a big crowd to enjoy all the fixings of a traditional New England-style clam bake.

Members of the Community Associates spent the day unloading racks of potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, fish, onions, sausage, hot dogs, and bags of lobsters.

To prepare for the feast, handpicked stones are heated under a wood fire all day. Before the bake process can begin, the wood and ash are carefully removed and the heated stones are covered in seaweed gathered locally. This natural cooking process was taught to the Pilgrims by the Native Americans who cooked in stone-lined pits which were dug into the ground.
