November 30, 1944 - May 28, 2025
NEW BEDFORD - Benjamin H. Tavares, 80, of New Bedford, entered eternal peace on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry B. Tavares and Bertha E. Tavares. Benny was a devoted member of Lakeville Family Worship Center.
His love for his childhood home in Rochester was matched only by his deep passion for horses, earning him the nickname “Cape Verdean Cowboy.” His expertise with horses was widely recognized, and many sought him out for training, boarding, and riding lessons. In his early years, he found joy in attending and participating in horse shows. Benny also had a profound love for the outdoors and farming. Above all, he cherished spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family. He especially looked forward to family gatherings, particularly St. John, and never hesitated to share stories from these cherished events.
Benny is survived by his children, Ronald A. Tavares of New Bedford and Tracey L. Tavares of New Bedford; his grandchildren, Ashley M. Kubik and her husband Kory Kubik of Assonet, Trevor M. Tavares of New Bedford, Ronae Tavares of Wareham, and his late granddaughter Serenity V. Tavares of Wareham; and his great-grandchildren, David Diaz Tavares, Cameron Tavares, Scarlett Barber, Violet Barber, Oliver Kubik, Kaylee Kubik, Dylan Kubik, and Grayson Kubik.
He is also survived by his sisters, Julianne Lopes of New Bedford, Barbara M. Sullivan of Marion, Jean E. Rose of Rochester, and Mary Ellen Gomes of Atlanta, GA. along with several nieces and nephews.
Benny and his cousins Butch Tavares, and the late Manual “Freddy” Tavares shared a special bond with secrets that only they could tell. He also leaves behind his dear and loyal friend, Ramon “Ray” Soltren, as well as his cherished canine companion, “Papi”. He deeply loved his other dog, “Oliver”, who passed before him but remained close to his heart.
