Better living through plants

Art and flowers made the perfect blend on Friday during the monthly Garden Therapy session for seniors.

Hosted for Wareham Council on Aging by the Wareham Garden Club, the class welcomed seniors to create unique floral arrangements using only their imagination and provided art supplies.

Seniors or elderly can find solace in the company of flowers. Hobbies such as floral arrangements and gardening can reduce their depression, improve memory and create a sense of community, believes the second vice-president of the club Diane Cook.

“Nature is just a great way to get to know everyone,” said Cook. “Every time you get people together with other people, it is an interaction. Sometimes it is positive, sometimes it is negative, sometimes things might not come out the way you want, but that’s not bad. It is creative and beautiful.”

One of the returning participants, Ann Marie Dunn, said she enjoyed the classes due to the positive energy flowers emanate, bringing happiness, creativity, compassion, and tranquility.

“The colors are so pretty, it is fun to be creative,” said Dunn. “It's a great program for any age.”
