Lieutenant Peter Flannery of the Wareham Police Department has put his badge on for one last time.

After 30 years of dedicated service to the Town of Wareham, Lieutenant Peter Flannery retired Saturday, July 19. What began as a position in the Harbormaster's office in 1994 ended with a successful career with the police department.

His journey with the Wareham Police Department commenced in 1997, when he was appointed as a police officer assigned to the Patrol Division. According to Chief Walter Correia Jr.,  Flannery's diligence and skills quickly became apparent, leading to his promotion to the Detective Division in 2003.

During his tenure in the Detective Division, Chief Correia said that Flannery distinguished himself through his investigative insight and tenacity, particularly in several successful narcotics cases across Cape Cod, South Shore and Boston.

Lieutenant Flannery served as a Cape Cod Drug Enforcement Administration as a Task Force Officer.

In 2010, Lieutenant Flannery was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, then promoted to rank of Lieutenant in 2019. Flannery served as the Patrol Supervisor, Operations Division Commander and Firearms Licensing Administrator

Chief Correia said that Flannery has been an invaluable member the department who consistently demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and deep commitment to the safety and well-being of the community.

"His contributions over the past three decades have left an indelible mark on Wareham Police Department and the lives of those he has served," said Chief Correia.

Flannery was honored at the Tuesday, Aug. 5 Select Board meeting with a Certificate of Appreciation for his time serving for the town. The board wished him a retirement full of motorcycle rides, time with his children, drone flying and dog walks.

Chair of the Select Board, Judith Whiteside congratulated Flannery and acknowledged the slew of officers that attended the meeting.

"I think it's very important for the town to understand how much you have meant to the department — how well respected you are," Whiteside said. "All these people are here and that's just awesome."

Flannery said that he would miss the camaraderie of the department the most.

"I had the privilege of working alongside some of the finest law enforcement specialists in Southeastern Massachusetts, it has truly been an honor," he said.
