Bird Island Challenge will be held August 11

The Gleason Family YMCA will host its annual paddling and rowing race, the Bird Island Challenge, on August 11 from Zecco Marine in downtown Wareham.

The event is open to all rowing and paddling boats of all sizes. Participants choose a 3-mile, 6-mile, or 13-mile route, the longest of which circumnavigates Bird Island in Marion.

Registration and breakfast begin at 7 a.m. A mandatory captain's meeting will follow at 7:30 a.m. The challenge begins at 8 a.m.

Participants must pre-register with a $45 registration fee before August 8 to be guaranteed a T-shirt. All racers will receive a race packet, breakfast, and lunch.

Internationally recognized environmentalist Richard Wheeler will be on hand for the race.

Proceeds from the event help the Gleason Y prove financial assistance for youth, families, and seniors.

Safety boats will be stationed along the course with the assistance the Wareham and Marion Harbormasters.

A new Pelican Pulse kayak, valued at $525, will be raffled on the day of the event. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Gleason Family YMCA, where the boat is displayed. You need not be present to win.
