Boats blessed at Onset Pier for the Fourth

The grey morning did not hamper the almost 200 people who came to watch the second annual Blessing of the Fleet at the Onset Pier Saturday.

Pastor Colon Wright and Father John Sullivan gave the blessing to the 15 boats entered in the Fourth of July event after Wareham High School rising senior Kiah Heryn sang the National Anthem. She was preceded by the Falmouth Fiddlers, a musical group, who performed for the crowd.

Volunteer Sharon Boyer said she and other members of the Onset Bay Association, as well as Assistant Harbormaster Jamie McIntosh were so pleased with how last year’s event went that they decided to put it on again this year.

“We want to make it an annual event,” Boyer said.

McIntosh said the event had been on a hiatus since the mid-1990s.

“I can remember, as a kid, we used to dress up our boat with flags and streamers,” McIntosh said. “It’s a smaller event now, but we are hoping to grow it. It was a good event last year, so it looks like it’s here to stay.”

Boyer said the three judges judged the entrants based on the decoration of the vessel, what the crew was wearing, and the smoothness of the boats’ approach to the pier.

“[It is based on] how they make the turn, and head out,” Boyer said. “It’s being in control of your vessel.”

The top three entries received prizes donated by local businesses. In first place was the boat “Heather’s Ring”, captained by Chad Crittenden, who won a marine radio, a coffee mug, and a key chain. In second place was the “Fish Hawk,” captained by Brian St. Germaine, and in third place was “Overbudget,” captained by Trenton Blanchard.
