Boys & Girls Club concert encourages kids to be themselves

A good time was had by all at the Wareham Boys & Girls Club’s concert, “Be Yourself” Friday afternoon.

The event brought a group of young children into the Boys & Girls Club building. The concert, which is set to be performed at several local Boys & Girls Clubs, kicked off its first performance in Wareham.

Organizer Sharon Jensen, the mother of performer Jillian Jensen, explained that she wanted to create an event which would encourage students to be good citizens and role models, and to be positive. “I’m a teacher, and I’m always looking for ways to encourage positivity in the kids. Music reaches them, it encourages them,” she said.

She was right - a number of concert-goers got up to perform themselves at one point in the afternoon. Other performances came from local singer-songwriters Amy Manny and Cassidy McGrath. The performers sang several confidence-inspiring songs. McGrath performed “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten, and Manny sang Alessia Cara’s “Stars to Your Beautiful.” Sharon hosted the concert, asking the children questions as the performers rotated on and off stage.

Later in the concert, Jillian improvised a song about friends, with ideas and lyrics suggested by the children. “This is short notice!” she said with a laugh. “I hope the song isn’t too awful.”

The group wrapped up the concert with the Cupid Shuffle, a dance which had everyone, including Wareham Boys & Girls Club Director Kenny Fontes, on their feet and moving. When it was finished, Jensen, McGrath and Manny were mobbed for autographs by young fans.

Future “Be Yourself” concerts are forthcoming; Sharon Jensen says that Friday’s was the first. Any schools or venues who are interested in having the concert visit are encouraged to email her at voicesintime@aol.com.
