Boys Soccer to start season with a young team

Boys Soccer Coach Evan Wilga is optimistic ahead of the fall season.

Wilga anticipates having a younger team this year, including many ninth grade players.

“We lost a big player last year with Matt Pearle,” said Wilga, noting that Matt’s younger brother, Joey, will be returning to the team this season.

Another pair of brothers, Luke and Nate Wiley, will also be on the team.

“[Players] are protective of their siblings, but they do compete from time to time,” said Wilga. He also said that the brothers seem happy to be on the team together.

“With Joey losing Matt, I think he’ll step into more of a leadership role this year,” Wilga said.

Another player to watch is Josh Flaherty, who is a fifth year player on the team, having joined in eighth grade.

Last year, the team ended up with four wins. Wilga said that although that might not sound like much to some people, it was an accomplishment for the team, which he described as a “small fish in a big pond.”

The team will also likely gain some new players during the pre-season.
