Buzzing in at Town Meeting

Officials are discussing bringing electronic voting for the Fall Town Meeting. Chair of the Board of Selectmen Alan Slavin said that he, Town Moderator Claire Smith, and Chairman of the Finance Committee Bernard Pigeon have been researching how Wareham could move to electronic voting.

If the town implemented electronic voting, each voter would use a small device to enter his or her vote instead of raising a hand. The benefits of electronic voting include privacy for voters and faster counts.

Slavin reported at the March 19 Board of Selectmen meeting that he has reached out to companies that provide this product for towns in Massachusetts for rental or purchase. Slavin has requested quotes for what it would cost to rent or buy these devices.

“It’ll be interesting to see if, with electronic voting, we have more people show up, more town employees show up, more business people who live in town show up, because everybody seems to be concerned that when someone votes everybody watches who votes,” Slavin said. “Hopefully, this will give us a larger turn-out and more representation in town.”
