Capt. Sherred Leslie Guille, 80, US Navy Retired
Capt. Sherred Leslie Guille, USN (Ret.), 80, ended his journey on this earth Oct. 9, 2010 in Sumerduck, Virginia after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was born August 14, 1930 to Andros and Inez Guille in Tucson, Arizona.
After his father's death in 1933, with the Great Depression being in full bloom, Sherred (or “Spike” as he was called as a boy) and his mother traveled by hopping rail cars in search of work. Their travels took them throughout the southwest, ending up in Los Angeles, CA. Spike stayed in Los Angeles until his mother died, then went to live with family in Chickamauga, Georgia. He graduated from Rossville High School in Rossville, GA, and moved to Chattanooga, TN.
Les (as he was known as an adult) joined the U.S. Navy in 1948, and served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) as an Electronics Technician. Later, he was accepted as a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. After graduating in 1955, he served on various ships, submarines and shore duty stations. He was Commanding Officer of one of the last diesel submarines, the USS Menhaden, and he had command of NOSC in San Diego and Hawaii. While in the Navy he was the recipient of many commendations and honors: the Navy Commendation Medal, Spanish Naval Cross of Merit, Navy Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and two Legion of Merit awards. He retired from the Navy in 1982.
After retirement from the US Navy, Les went to work for Rockwell International, returning to the Washington DC area in 1989. Upon retirement from Rockwell, Les spent his time volunteering as a resource for others afflicted with prostate cancer and in tutoring at the Literacy Volunteers of Fauquier County’s English as a Second Language program in Warrenton, VA.
Les married Nancy Jane Hackney of Arlington, VA in 1955. He is survived by his adoring wife and two daughters, Katherine Guille, of Sumerduck, VA and Sarah Corbitt, of Wareham, three grandchildren, Nicholas, Simon and Alexandra, three loving sisters-in-law and many friends.
Les was a self-made man with a warm and loving heart and a great sense of humor which saw him, and those around him, through the final journey. It was said that he “went from boxcars to Benzes and had a heck of a ride in between." “Granddaddy” will be deeply missed.
There will be a memorial service at Church in the Pines, in West Wareham on Sunday, October 24 at 2 p.m. He will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on January 18.
Arrangements made through Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton, VA.
