Carleton R. Matthews, 67

Carleton R. Matthews, 67, of Wareham, died Jan. 26 in Tobey Hospital, after injuries he sustained in an automobile accident. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Merrill) Matthews.

He was born in Wareham and lived there all of his life. He graduated from Wareham High School. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Navy.

He enjoyed drag racing.

Survivors include two daughters, Stefanie L. Matthews, of East Wareham, and Alisha Mendes, of Brockton; two sons, Joel C. Matthews, of North Attleboro and Richard Gonsalves and his wife Alex, of Plymouth; two brothers, Kenneth Matthews, of West Wareham, and Raymond Matthews, of Plymouth; a sister, Harriet Matthews Mendes, of New Bedford; eight grandchildren, Karlai, Lyrik, King David, Carliss, Saveion, Angela, Devyn and Keaton; two great grandchildren, Kailani and Caleb; several nephews and nieces. He was the brother of the late William Matthews.

His funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 1 from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 82 High St., Wareham. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Visiting hours are from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
