The Wareham-Bourne Race Amity group will host a celebration of Race Amity Day with music, games and fun on Sunday, June 12, at 11 a.m. in Buzzards Bay Park on Main Street in Buzzards Bay.

The group explained that amity can be defined as peace, harmony, goodwill, friendship or warmth.

“Within the context of race, it refers to developing and practicing those qualities with people from different races, ethnicities, and cultures,”  a press release reads. “It is a largely unexplored perspective yet, our nation’s history gives well-known examples in the friendships between former slave Harriet Tubman and abolitionist Quaker Thomas Garrett; First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune - both champions of civil rights, justice, and the advancement of women.”

The group points out that these friendships are also a tradition in this country and offer a counterpoint to the country’s history of racism.

“This other tradition is based on the moral principle of the organic oneness and unity of humankind,” the group wrote. “Race Amity inspires commitment and support and includes a willingness to take risks and engage in personal sacrifice for others.”
