Challenge against Johar's residency filed with Town Clerk's office
A challenge to whether Board of Selectmen candidate Amit Johar actually lives in Wareham has been filed with the Town Clerk's office, according to Town Clerk Mary Ann Silva. The challenge was made by Anthony Scarsciotti of Wareham.
A meeting open to the public will be held by the four-member Board of Registrars, of which Silva is chairman, on Thursday, March 22, at 3 p.m. in the Town Hall auditorium to determine whether to move forward with the challenge.
If the board decides to move forward, a public hearing will be held in which the Board of Registrars will subpoena Johar, the challenger, and any witnesses pertinent to the case.
In order to run for office in Wareham, a person must be registered to vote in Wareham, according to Silva.
On the voter registration form a person must provide a Wareham address and sign and attest under the penalties of perjury that the information given on the form is true, Silva explained. The Clerk's office does not investigate a person's residency at that time.
"We do not have a residency requirement to run for office in Wareham," said Silva. "My job is to register people to vote. It's the Board of Registrars job … to investigate that if a complaint comes in."
