Coach previews basketball season

After beginning its season with one win and one loss, the Wareham Vikings boys basketball team’s season is as young as its roster.

“We lost four of five starters from last season to this season,” coach Kevin Brogioli said.

With such a young squad, Brogioli has one major change in store for the 2013-2014 season: moving senior guard Mason Vasconcellos from shooting guard to point guard. Vasconcellos was also named the team’s captain.

However, Brogioli will also be looking to senior forward Latroy Hairston to lead the team on and off the court.

"I can do more things now. I don't have to fill one role, like last year my role was to just rebound," Hairston said.

"We're going to need [Hairston's] scoring," Brogioli said.

For the team as a whole, Brogioli will be looking to have a fast-moving offense.

“We will want to run the floor a lot this season,” said Brogioli. “We will want to wear our opponents out.”

To create a fast offense, the Vikings will try a combination of man and zone press defenses.

“I look to VCU, Virginia Commonwealth University, and their defense. I want them to try and mimick that,” Brogioli explained.

This will be Brogioli’s 16th year as head coach. Before coaching the varsity squad, he was the junior varsity coach for 13 seasons.

However, there Brogioli always feels pressure.

“It’s tough when you have your father’s name painted on the floor you’re coaching on,” Brogioli admitted. Earlier this year, his father, James Brogioli, was inducted into the Wareham sports hall of fame.
