A conversation with 1,000-point scorer Amber Filkins
After scoring her 1,000th point on Feb. 7, Amber Filkins took a few moments to do a question and answer session with Wareham Week. Here is an excerpt:
What does basketball mean to you?
It means a lot. Not a lot of girls, especially from Wareham, take basketball seriously. It’s my sanctuary. If I have a bad day at school, it takes my problems away.
Why do you love basketball?
I have always loved the game since I was 7. I went to the YMCA a lot, and the game came to me. My dad got me involved at a young age. He was a high school player.
Remember your first high school points?
Yeah, it was on the vineyard. I had only been to Martha’s Vineyard twice, and I wasn’t used to taking those long boat rides. I get sea sick. So, I was really wicked nervous for that being my first varsity game.
Will you play basketball in college?
I want to play in college. I really like the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. I stayed there overnight a few months ago. I got to meet the team and see a practice. I loved it. I think I can fit right in. They had a large freshmen class last year, so they’re not doing much recruiting. I really want to go there… but I need to wait for financial aid.
What does your 1,000th point mean?
It was the best day of my life. The boys team came back at the perfect time and got the crowd into the game. The game was weight off my shoulders. Getting the upset win was huge. Other teams said we couldn’t beat Bourne. I’m never going to forget the game, the day, nothing.
