Cookies, mouths decorated at library event

Dec 21, 2015

Though their mouths ended up slightly more decorated than their cookies, more than 50 youngsters trooped through the Wareham Free Library Saturday morning to decorate gingerbread men and sugar cookies.

Reference services librarian Deb Rich said the event was part of the library’s ongoing series of monthly events for the children and families in the area. The series started with the library taking part in Star Wars Reads Day on Oct. 10.

Though the sugar cookies were store-bought, the gingerbread men weren’t, Rich said. The staff asked local grocery stores to donate the gingerbread men, but they either did not sell gingerbread men, or were unable to donate as many as the library needed for the event.

But, as they were “futzing around on the Internet, and we happened to find this bakery called ‘The Sweetest Thing.’”

“I emailed [bakery owner Valerie Perry], and asked, ‘Would you be able to donate anything – cookies, your time, anything?’” Rich said. “She said she’d be happy to donate the cookies.”

Though the event called for about 48 gingerbread men, Rich said Perry didn’t even flinch when it came to the amount of cookies the library needed.

“She’s been fantastic, and the cookies are fantastic,” Rich said. “It’s just the kind of cookie you want for decorating. If I bake gingerbread, it comes out soft. But when professionals bake it, it comes out hard, and … that’s what you need for a good decorating cookie.”

The Amazin’ Gamin’ of Cape Cod video game truck will be at the library again on Dec. 29, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. There will also be RC car racing, as well as a ‘Do You Want to Build a Snowman?’ day, in January.

The library will be closed Dec. 21 – Dec. 27, for a collection move and the holiday.
