Council on Aging chairman resigns

Jan 8, 2015

The recently reorganized Council on Aging Board of Directors accepted the resignation of its former chairman, Gene Presjner, at its board meeting Wednesday.

Presjner, who was not present at the meeting, resigned from the board effective Dec. 4.

His letter of resignation read: "I regrettably resign as a member of the board of the Council on Aging as of Thursday, Dec. 4. I feel the objectives of this board are unachievable at this time."

The board unanimously elected Peter Dunlop as the new chairman for 2015-16 and Sharon Frank and Muriel Slaney remained vice chairman and secretary, respectively.

In response to the resignation, the board released a statement, which said; "It is with regret that the board of the Council on Aging accepts the resignation of Gene Presjner. Mr. Presjner was instrumental in resurrecting the Council on Aging and enlisting most of its current members . . . Although we are learning as we go, we are still looking to make the Council on Aging a viable resource for all seniors in Wareham."

With the failed Proposition 2 1/2 vote in June, the Council on Aging lost all of its town funding. It had received $82,000 from the town for each of the previous two years. Town officials cited the non-essential nature of the Council on Aging as a reason it lost funding.

A new crop of seniors joined the board, which held its first meeting in October, hoping to revitalize the Council on Aging.

One of the first goals the board hopes to accomplish is restarting the publication of the "Senior Beacon" newsletter. The board will hold a meeting next week in the hopes of getting the Beacon published and circulating in the near future.
