Council on Aging will kick off 2022 with a strong lineup of January events

The Council on Aging has planned a variety of activities for Wareham seniors this January. For a complete schedule, visit https://www.wareham.ma.us/council-aging

All activities take place in the Multiservice Center at 48 Marion Rd. unless otherwise noted. Masks are required inside all town buildings, and if schools are closed due to weather conditions the senior center will be closed as well. 

Join the Council on Aging for Acrylic Paint Day on Jan. 7. From 10 a.m. to noon, seniors are invited to paint and take home a completed project. The fee is $15, and all materials are provided. Space in the class is limited, so please call 508-291-3130 to reserve a spot.

Back “by popular demand,” Barbara Pelletier will offer a craft class at Cranberry Café on Jan. 11. The class will be at 1 p.m., and registration is required by calling 508-291-3130. A $2 donation is requested.

On Jan. 14 at 10:30 a.m. the Wareham Garden Club will offer garden therapy. The Garden Club generously provides the materials to create a beautiful arrangement. Call 508-291-3130 to reserve a place.

On Jan. 20, preventative dental services will once again be offered by Dental Hygiene Services. These services are covered by Mass Health Standards and affordable rates are available for individuals without dental insurance. Please call 508-827-6725 to make appointments or for more information.

The Greater Food Bank of Boston will deliver food orders from 9 to 10 a.m. on Jan. 21 to those who signed up previously.  

Anyone who has not signed up for a monthly food distribution of fresh food and staples on the fourth Friday of each month, can do so now. To be eligible, people must be 60 years of age or older and have an income under $1,400 per month for one person or $1,900 for two. Call the Council on Aging at 508 295-3130 for an application.

On Jan. 26, join the Council on Aging for a greeting card making class at 9:30 a.m. Materials will be provided to make four to five finished cards. Call 508-291-3130 to sign up. 

A four-week Beginners Acrylic Painting Class is also on the agenda in 2022. The class will be held on Wednesdays (Jan. 26 to Feb. 16) from 10 a.m. to noon. The classes will be held in the Cranberry Café. Call 508-291-3130 to register by Jan. 19, 2022. Only 12 students will be allowed per class. $40 fee includes all supplies.

The Council on Aging will also host its winter luncheon on Jan. 26 at 11:30 a.m. The menu will include barbecue pork patty with tater tots and veggies. Dessert will be provided by the students of the WHS Culinary Arts program. Please make a reservation the week before by calling Cheryl at 508-291-3100 ext. 6514. A donation of $2.50 is appreciated.

Following the winter luncheon, cash-only bingo will begin at 12:30 p.m. Cards will be 50 cents each, and a raffle by the Advocates for Wareham Seniors will also be held.

On Jan. 31, Postcards from Onset will be screened at 1 p.m. 

Seniors can also look forward to a Valentine Dinner Dance, which will be held on Feb. 11. Tickets will cost $5 per person, and a buffet will be provided by Minkle Boys Catering of Wareham. Tickets must be purchased before Feb. 3 by calling 508-291-3130. 

Regular activities will continue: 

On Mondays, play cribbage from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 208. From 9 to 10 a.m., take a circuit exercise class with Marge Blinstrub temporarily at the Wareham Free Library. No registration is required. Pay $3 at the door.

Knitters — advanced and beginners — are invited to come together to work on projects on Mondays at 10 a.m. Call 508-291-3130 to sign up.

On Tuesdays, join seniors for coffee and conversation from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Cranberry Cafe. Play Mahjong starting at 1 p.m. in the Cranberry Cafe.

At the Multiservice Center on Tuesdays, play chair volleyball at 10 a.m. or practice Tai Chi at 1:30 p.m.

On Wednesdays at 1 p.m., learn to make mats for the homeless in Room 102. 

On Thursdays, Chair Yoga with Pam meets at 2 p.m. Registration is required.

On Fridays, learn country line dancing at the Wareham Free Library with Marge Blinstrub from 9 to 10 a.m. No registration is required. Pay $3 at the door.

Grab and Go Lunches continue Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pick up the free lunches courtesy of the Old Colony Elder Services at the Multi-Service Center handicap ramp between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Lunches must be reserved at least three days ahead of the scheduled delivery date by calling 508-291-3130. Senior Tax Work-Off Program forms are available in the COA Office.
