Cranberry Harvest Celebration draws thousands from across the world

Tens of thousands of people took advantage of sunny, 80-degree weather and attended the 8th annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration hosted by the A.D. Makepeace Company and the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association this weekend.

More than 24,000 people stopped by A.D. Makepeace's Tihonet Road property just on Saturday to learn about the cranberry harvest, shop the dozens of vendors, and celebrate the area's biggest agricultural offering.

That is about the same number of people who attended last year's celebration in total. With an additional 12,000 people on Sunday, this year's event blew last year right out of the water (or bog!), with a total of 36,000 in attendance.

"It's so beautiful," Linda Burke, director of communication and marketing for A.D. Makepeace, said of the harvest.

Festival-goers seemed to agree. Burke noted that visitors from as far away as Japan and Germany visited the festival.

"People said they'd planned a vacation around this," she said.

The Cranberry Harvest Celebration offered helicopter rides, wagon rides, activities for children, and of course, tons of food and cranberry products.

"We couldn't do this without the volunteers," Michael Hogan, A.D. Makepeace president and CEO noted.

More than 200 volunteers informed visitors about the harvesting process, manned informational booths, and assisted in various other ways to ensure the festival went smoothly.

Hogan noted that in addition to harvesting the Frogfoot bog, which is the bog on which festival attendees viewed the harvest in real-time, A.D. Makepeace was harvesting in three other areas this weekend. And that was just a small part of the harvest.

As attendees prepared to get off a school bus and view the harvest, Pat Hymel, who oversees the Frogfoot bog, noted: "This is just a little peace of Frogfoot!" The Frogfoot area is more than 250 acres.

Experts say this year's harvest is slated to be among the better ones in recent years. Check out more photos of the celebration in the galleries!
