Crews respond to brush fire on Route 495

Apr 14, 2023

Seventeen Wareham and Onset firefighters responded to a half-acre brush fire on Route 495 in Wareham on the afternoon of Thursday, April 13.

According to Wareham Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Haskell, the fire started in the area between Exit 1, which leads to Route 195, and Exit 2, which leads to Route 58.

It grew to half an acre in area before being extinguished over the course of two hours.

The fire took place in the wooded area separating I-495 North and I-495 South. There were no injuries or reports of damage to vehicles, but traffic on both ends was reduced to one lane until 3:30 p.m., when the fire was put out.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but Haskell said the recent streak of hot, dry weather likely contributed to it.

“We’re at the height of brushfire season in southeastern Massachusetts,” he said.

He expects the Fire Department to respond to more of such fires in the near future.
