Cultivating leaders, starting in middle school
Leadership comes in many forms and every person is a leader- if they choose to be. That was the message of Wareham Middle School's celebration of new inductees to the National Honors Society (NHS) on Thursday afternoon.
The 27 new members (5 seventh-graders and 22 sixth-graders) were called up one by one and their short bios were read to the audience as they received their certificates.
"Only you can choose what kind of character you exhibit," said NHS officer Leila Foote. "Make it a good one."
Foote was one of five speakers explaining the pillars of success within NHS. These pillars include scholarship, character, citizenship, service, and leadership.
"Be the change you want to see in the world, but start small, here at Wareham Middle School," said NHS president Julianne Matthews on leadership.
Matthews played a TEDTalk video after her speech. It was a talk by Drew Dudley on redefining leadership and how often we devalue our own leadership. A simple moment or action could change another person's life, said Dudley.
Since she joined the NHS last year, Matthews has participated in Relay for Life, selling candy bars and raising money through social media. She started a peer tutoring program this year where NHS members help other students on Tuesday and Wednesdays.
"I like being the leader- organizing events and stuff like that," said Matthews.
She said her favorite part of the induction process was reading the applicants' biographies and getting to know them through their writing.
The seventh-graders that were inducting are as follows: Brianna Beranger, Cecilia Bottino, Madison Boutin, Wylde LaTulippe, and Taylor Voner.
The sixth-graders that were inducted are as follows: Amaya Anderson, Glenn Barrows Jr., Benjamin Brogioli, Ethan Cavacas, Maverick Cavacas, James Fitzgerald, Chloe Hogan, Colleen Hogan, Allison Horton, Savannah Kelley, Madison Murphy, Courtney Osburne, Adrienne Padden, Annmarie Perry, Olivia Powers, Colton Rasmussen, Noah Reardon, Makayla Semiao, Katelyn Trask, Abby Wiksten, Luke Wiley, Faith Wills.
