Damien's Place receives $3,000 donation
Shaw’s Supermarket in Wareham has donated $3,000 worth of food to local food bank Damien’s Place.
“They’ve been really good to us,” said Damien’s Place volunteer Henry Fernandes. On Jan. 20, he watched happily as two overflowing pallets of food were loaded into the back of a small trailer truck. Shaw’s General Manager Joe Orlando joined him to explain the program, called the Spirit of Giving, now in its third year running.
The Spirit of Giving is a food drive held at all Shaw’s locations. When certain products are bought, a portion of the sale price is set aside. At the end of the program, the total portion of money set aside is tallied, and the amount of food equal to that number is donated to local food pantries. Orlando explained that the amount of food and money donated per year can fluctuate, depending on how much of each product included in the food drive is purchased.
“I believe this is more than last year, though,” he said, eyeing the towering pallets.
The holidays isn’t the only time that Shaw’s works to feed the hungry, however. There is a barrel placed year-round in the store, where donations of non-perishable food can be made to Damien’s Place.
