DNA evidence used to arrest Wareham man accused of Cranberry Highway Burglary

Aug 31, 2012

A Wareham man accused of breaking and entering into Speedy Mart on Cranberry Highway in late July was arrested with the help of DNA evidence, Wareham Police said on Friday.

Matthew Decosta, who is 22 years old and listed as homeless, was arrested on Tuesday, August 28, and arraigned at Wareham Fourth District Court, police said.

He is charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime, larceny from a building, and malicious destruction over $250. Various areas of Speedy Mart building were damaged, and items were stolen, during the burglary on July 27, police said.

Officers responding to the alarm at Speedy Mart last month collected samples of blood at the scene, police said. DNA from the samples were then found to match with Decosta in July, police said.

This is the first breaking and entering incident in Wareham solved using DNA technology where the suspect was completely unknown, police said.
