Dog’s EEE diagnosis in question

Aug 21, 2019

Last week, Wareham Week published an article stating that a local dog had died from EEE. Since then, questions have been raised about the veracity of that information, which was provided by the owners.

“The Department of Public Health has not received a report of that,” said  Dr. Catherine Brown of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Although she was unfamiliar with the specific case, Brown spoke generally about EEE in dogs.

She said that there has only been one documented case of EEE in dogs, which was found in puppies in the Southern United States.

“It’s not impossible, but it would be very unusual,” Brown said.

There are a number of other diseases that invade the central nervous system.

“So when you have those type of symptoms you have to have a list of possibilities,” said Brown.

The owner said that her mother was sure that the dog had EEE, but declined to give contact information for the dog’s veterinarian.
