Dorothea W. Shoemaker, 89
Dorothea W. (Windish) Shoemaker, 89, of New Bedford, formerly of Wareham and Wenonah, N.J., died on April 13 at the Oaks in New Bedford. She was the widow of LeRoy C. Shoemaker who died in 1996. They were married for 49 years.
She was born in Abington, Penn. the daughter of the late Harry and Dorothea (Gregory) Windish. She lived in Thorofare, N.J. and Wenonah, N.J. for many years before moving to Wareham in 1991.
Mrs. Shoemaker graduated from Paulsboro High School, Paulsboro, N.J. and Temple University School of Medicine.
Mrs. Shoemaker worked at Delaware Memorial Hospital, in Wilmington, Delaware where she established the statewide cancer detection centers. Later she worked as the assistant librarian at Gateway High School in Woodbury Heights, N.J.
She was an active member of the Wenonah and Wareham Garden Clubs and a member of the United Methodist Church in Wenonah, N.J. and the Wesley United Methodist Church in Wareham. She was a member of the Society of Clinical Pathologists, the Philadelphia Swim Society, and the Wenonah Swim Club.
Survivors include her children, Janet S. Swanson of Newton and Dr. Harry Shoemaker and his wife, Anne Croke Shoemaker of Marion; 2 grandchildren, Brent Shoemaker of Salem and Michaela Shoemaker of Marion. She was the grandmother of the late Nicole Shoemaker.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. Burial will follow in Agawam Cemetery.
Visiting hours are from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
