Dorothy L. (Scheffler) Butler of Plymouth and St. Croix, USVI, formally of Weston, died peacefully surrounded by family on January 21, 2013.  Beloved wife of the late James J. "Bo" Butler, Jr. who passed away on January 21, 2001.

Loving mother of Diane McGoldrick and husband Tom of Wareham; Casslyn Allen and her husband Craig of Plymouth; James J. Butler, III and his wife Toni-Ann of Londonderry, NH; Michael T. Butler of Boston, and Dolly Ryan and her husband Bob of Southborough.  Beloved sister of Phyllis McDonough of Plymouth.  She is survived by 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her brother, the late Joseph H. Scheffler and her sister, the late Jean S. Morrissey.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. & Dorothy (Haertl) Scheffler.  A graduate of Jamaica Plain High School, she also graduated from Sargent College at Boston University with a degree in physical education.  She was a lifelong summer resident of the White Island Pond community, and moved there year round from Weston.

Mrs. Butler was instrumental in the development of legislation to protect Special Needs residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  She worked tirelessly for many years with both the Volpe and Sargent administrations on Beacon Hill.

Her funeral service will be held on Thurs., January 24th at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham, at 11:00 AM.  Internment will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.  Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 5 – 8 PM.
