One Wareham Water Department well is pumping more efficiently thanks to a $60,000 grant from Eversource.

On Monday morning, the pump was removed, fitted with a variable frequency drive and then reinstalled. According to Wareham Water Superintendent Andrew Reid, the new drive, which automatically regulates how much water is pumped, will save 10 to 15 percent in energy costs for that well.

“We’re always trying to improve efficiency because we’re conscious of the ratepayers,” said Reid.

The drive cost a total of $90,000. The remaining cost was covered by the water department. Grant funds came from Eversource’s energy efficiency program, which helps cities and towns save money on electrical bills. The grant program is funded through a surcharge on customer’s energy bills.

Reid extended thanks to Steve Grattan, Eversource’s municipal liaison, for working hard on making sure Wareham earned the grant.

“He went above and beyond,” said Reid.
