Family to honor Wareham woman with 6th annual drive, cancer walk
The memory of Wareham’s Marie Auld lives on six years after she passed away from lung cancer as her children prepare for another homegrown fundraiser in Auld’s honor.
For the sixth consecutive year, Kristen Murphy, Megan Greene and Ken Metivier are preparing to help out a local organization in the name of their mother. This year, the siblings are looking to collect new or gently used winter coats. Donations will be handed over to Turning Point, a Wareham-based nonprofit that provides services for the homeless and near homeless.
“We wanted to pick something that wouldn’t cost money for people looking to donate,” said Metivier. “Everyone has a coat they don’t wear hanging in their closet.”
Last year, the group collected school supplies and donated 1,200 items, including pens, pencils, notebooks and more to Wareham Public Schools.
This year, the family aims to collect 300 coats. The drive culminates with the annual “Walk for Marie,” scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Buttonwood Park in New Bedford.
The walk is free and open to all and refreshments and T-shirts will be given away to participants. Metivier said there’s been between 80 to 100 people participating annually, adding that he hopes it continues to grow.
Looking ahead, Metivier said he and his siblings are searching for another local group to collect donations for next year.
Anyone interested in donating items or benefiting from a future drive can reach Metivier at 508-816-9393, Greene at 508-889-5923, 508-291-5022 or Jeannette Johnson at 781-336-8917.
