Family member says absent Selectman is in Florida
Selectman Michael Schneider is “fine” and is in Florida, according to his son who answered the door of the family’s 1st Avenue home on Thursday, September 1.
For weeks it has been speculated that Schneider will resign from his position on the Board of Selectmen. He has currently missed two consecutive regularly scheduled Board of Selectmen meetings and one special meeting of the board.
Adding to the uncertainty, Schneider has not spoken to at least three of his colleagues in nearly a month. Town Administrator Mark Andrews and Selectmen Steve Holmes and Cara Winslow said they have not seen or heard from Schneider since he attended the town's National Night Out event on August 2.
“I’m concerned. It is not normal for someone to up and move and leave a responsibility like this,” Winslow said Thursday. “He has not communicated with anyone that I am aware of. ... He needs to make a decision on his future as a Selectman.”
Schneider has not responded to numerous requests for comment, including messages sent to his personal and town-issued e-mail accounts.
On September 1, calls made to the Schneider residence were met with an automated response stating: “The party you are trying to reach is not currently accepting phone calls at this number.”
His colleagues on the Board of Selectmen all say they haven't heard that Schneider would be resigning.
As of September 1, the Town Clerk's office had not received a letter of resignation from Schneider.
Schneider was elected to the Board of Selectmen in April in a six-way race for two open seats on the board. The race was the 42-year-old's first run for political office.
He received the second-highest number of votes in the race, behind Begley. Schneider and Begley are co-founders of citizens' group and political action committee Move Wareham Forward and ran as an informal team.
Selectmen Chair Walter Cruz and Selectmen Ellen Begley did not immediately return requests for comment.
