Fate and friendship bring newborns together
Thirty years ago, fate brought these two moms together, and on Sept. 9, fate brought them even closer.
Born just a day and a half apart, Katherine Andrade and Jacqueline Ryerson have been in each other’s lives since they were born at Tobey Hospital in May 1982. Thirty-three years later, history repeated itself when they gave birth to two little girls, Reagan Roomey and Brandi Ryerson, just a day apart.
Ryerson's mother was in a shared maternity room after giving birth to her on May 4 when Andrade’s mom was wheeled in to the shared room. Andrade was born two days later.
It seems the stars have always been aligned for these two women. Andrade just so happened to be with Ryerson and Ryerson's boyfriend – now husband – when she met the man she would spend her life with.
They have weaved in and out of each other’s lives, but were closest when they were in high school and as young adults.
“You know, life gets busy,” Ryerson said. “But we always kept each other’s number in our phone.”
After losing touch for a while, the two ended up buying houses in the same neighborhood in East Wareham, completely by chance.
But the magic really happened when Katherine saw Jacqueline last winter at Triad ObGyn. Andrade saw Ryerson checking in, and texted Ryerson to tell her she was pregnant, too. Ryerson’s due date was Sept. 5 while Andrade’s was Sept. 15.
“We got the due dates, and I said, 'Wouldn’t it be crazy if we were in the hospital together at the same time?’” Andrade said.
“And we were!” Ryerson said.
The pair both found out the sex of their babies on the same day, too. As fate would have it, they would both be having girls.
Reagan is Andradre’s second child. Coming in she knew that she would be having a Caesarian section. Her surgery was scheduled for Sept. 8.
“I didn’t really have any control over when I would come in to deliver,” Andradre said.
Andrade was being prepped for her C-section when she received a text from Ryerson saying her water had broken and that she was also at Tobey waiting to have her baby. Andrade’s daughter Reagan was born on Sept. 8 and Ryerson’s first child, Brandi, was born Sept. 9.
Though they’d joked about the possibility of their kids being born a day apart from one another, neither really thought it would happen. They entertained the idea that maybe they’d see each other in the maternity ward, one being wheeled in while the other was checking out. Of course, fate intervened.
“I told Jackie, ‘Well, it’s fate,’” Andrade laughed. “‘We’re supposed to have our daughters together, and they’re gonna grow up together.’ I didn’t really think it would [happen] though.”
