The Onset and Wareham fire departments have received more than $29,000 in funds through the state’s Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program.

Onset Fire received $17,110 while Wareham Fire was granted $12,500.

In Onset, the fire district will be using the funds to purchase ice rescue equipment, coldwater rescue suits, and some specialized fire-fighting equipment.

Wareham Fire will use its funds to replace a piece of its communications tower that was damaged in an October storm.

Under the Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program, local departments can apply for up to 118 different types of eligible fire safety equipment.

This includes personal protective clothing, gear washers and dryers, thermal imaging cameras, assorted hand tools and extrication equipment, communications resources, hazardous gas meters and fitness equipment.

In many cases, the purchase of this equipment will help departments attain compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration or National FireProtection Association safety standards, according to the Department of Fire Services.
