Fire that engulfed unoccupied Onset home considered suspicious
Officials are considering the cause of a fire that engulfed a house behind 278 Onset Ave. just after 8:30 p.m. on Saturday to be suspicious, according to the Onset Fire Department. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries as a result of the blaze.
The vacant home, located at 6 Back Street, is on a dirt road behind Onset Avenue, which made it difficult for firefighters to gain access to the house. Onset firefighters reported “heavy fire conditions” on the first floor of the one-and-a-half story building when they arrived. The department's response was delayed when the first firetruck on the scene became stuck on the dirt road.
Two firefighters were taken to Tobey Hospital after suffering minor injuries while battling the blaze. The firefighters were treated and released later that evening, according to the Onset Fire Department.
The fire engulfed the home and small fires were spreading to the surrounding wooded area. It took 50 firefighters 90 minutes to extinguish the fire.
According to Wareham Assessor's records, Cole Realty Trust of South Carver owns the property.
In addition to Onset Fire, the Wareham, Bourne, Sandwich, and Plymouth fire departments responded to the scene.
The fire is being investigated by the Onset Fire Department in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s office.
