Former Wareham Gatemen named one of MLB’s best pitchers
Former Wareham Gatemen now Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes was recently named the National League Cy Young winner.
The Cy Young is awarded to the best pitcher in each of the two conferences — the National League and American League — that make up Major League Baseball.
Skenes was unanimously voted the National League’s best pitcher and received the award Wednesday, Nov. 12 following his dominant second season in the majors.
Skenes’ 1.97 earned-run-average was the best in baseball last season and his 216 strikeouts tied for fourth best in the league.
Skenes’ one season in Wareham in 2021 saw him appear in five games and record an earned-run-average of 5.63. In eight innings of work, Skenes recorded 11 strikeouts for the Gatemen.
This marks the second award in Skenes’ career. He was named the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year.
The Wareham Gatemen are a part of the Cape Cod Baseball League, an amateur summer baseball league where top college prospects come to Wareham and the cape to compete in front of Major League Baseball scouts.
