Four arrested for unlawful gun possession in Onset
Four men are charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after a routine patrol check turned up a load revolver in an Onset apartment.
On Tuesday, police arrested 21-year-old James Pires, 25-year-old Curtis Pires Jr., 24-year-old Thomas Gomes, and 24-year-old Michael Rezendes.
Police were called to Pires' apartment located at 1 West Central Ave. in Onset to assist Parole Officer Nathan Mendes who is assigned to parolee James Pires.
Pires is on parole for unlawful possession of a firearm and is subject to routine checks by Mendes.
As officers were checking the apartment, they detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from one of the rooms. When they opened the door to that room, they observed Curtis Pires Jr., Gomes, and Rezendes.
Gomes and Curtis Pires Jr. were both found to be in possession of a small amount of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. As the detectives continued their investigation, they observed a pair of black sneakers outside the room’s window, one of which appeared to have the butt of a gun sticking out of it.
Upon closer examination, investigators observed a, fully loaded .38 caliber revolver handgun in one of the sneakers. The other matching sneaker contained a small digital scale that is commonly used for illegal drug activity. Detectives also located “corner cut” baggies, clear glassine baggies, and quart sized baggies that had a strong odor of fresh marijuana coming from each.
All four individuals were arrested and transported to the Wareham Police Department where all four were booked on the same charge of Possessing a Firearm Without a F.I.D. card.
Curtis Pires Jr., Gomes, and Rezendes were released on bail while James Pires was held overnight at the police station. All four appeared at Wareham District Court the next morning. Curtis Pires Jr., Gomes, and Rezendes were released after their arraignment and are scheduled to appear for a pre-trial hearing on May 4.
James Pires is being held at the Plymouth County House of Correction on a Parole Detainer and is also scheduled to appear on May 4 for pre-trial.
Chief Richard Stanley praised his detectives and parole officer Mendes for their cooperative effort in getting a potentially dangerous loaded gun off the streets of Wareham and making this town a safer place.
