A fresh pair of eyes joins the Sewer Commissioners
Wareham resident Scott Soby has been appointed to bring a fresh set of eyes to the Board of Sewer Commissioners, filling a vacancy left by the resignation of Peter Dunlop.
In discussing his candidacy with the Select Board and the Sewer Commissioners, Soby emphasized the experience he would bring to the role.
“I do have a background in microbiology,” Soby said. “So, even though I don’t have an engineering background, I do know a little bit of what’s happening out there in the tanks.”
“I’m glad that somebody has a better understanding than I do,” replied chair of the Sewer Commissioners, Jim Giberti.
“I find Mr. Soby to be an excellent candidate,” said Sewer Commissioner Bob Scanlan.
Chair of the Select Board Judith Whiteside said the Select Board interviewed Soby for the position, and “I believe that we thought he was well qualified and interested.”
Soby said he knew he was “at the very bottom of the learning curve,” but that he was happy to learn.
He said he served formerly as the director of a 20-acre camp in Arizona, and helped bring the sewer infrastructure of that camp in compliance with regulations.
He said he moved to Wareham in January full time, and always wanted to be more involved in local government. He currently serves on the Conservation Committee.
Sewer Commissioner Sandra Slavin said it could be a “major advantage” if Soby looked through the Sewer Commissioners’ website with fresh eyes and the ability to suggest improvements.
Soby’s position on the Board of Sewer Commissioners is a temporary one. The Board of Sewer Commissioners is an elected body, and Soby will serve in the role until it can be filled through next year’s town elections, with his term expiring on May 5, 2025.
The position became vacant due to the resignation of Sewer Commissioner Peter Dunlop.
