Frosty visits the library
Some may refer to him as someone with a corncob pipe and a button nose or the snowman who came to life one day, but the children best know him as Frosty the Snowman. This jolly happy soul was a highly anticipated visitor at the Wareham Free Library on Saturday, January 22.
Infants to eight year olds met with Frosty. The day began with a fun sing-a-long led by Jackson Gilman, who played the ukulele.
The boys and girls then began to listen intently to Marcia Hickey, the children’s librarian, as she read Frosty the Snowman. But it was when the snowman himself came out to the crowd that the children’s eyes lit up. Nearly every little child was smiling and vying for Frosty’s attention.
This is the second year that Frosty has made an appearance at the library.
“I guess his reputation grew quite a bit since last year,” said Kathy Gleason, president the Friends of the Wareham Free Library, which put on the event. Just a dozen or so kids visited last year, but this year there were about 30 children eagerly awaiting their chance to meet Frosty and take a picture with the friendly snowman.
Hot cocoa and snacks were offered to families while the kids made snowflakes and igloos out of marshmallows or colored holiday pictures.
Many children were eager to eat the marshmallows rather than make something out of them, however.
“I’m going to hang my snowflake up in my room,” said eight-year-old Kara Young. “But I’m sure someone’s going to eat it before I get to.”
The next scheduled event for the Friends will take place Saturday, February 12, and will once again feature Gilman singing and playing songs for the children.
