Fundraiser keeps it Strictly Sinatra at Salerno's
Despite the downpour Friday night, 60 people braved their way through the stormy night to listen to Michael Dutra perform spot-on renditions of Frank Sinatra songs for an Onset Bandshell fundraiser at Salerno’s Function Hall.
Dutra was the main act of the fundraiser, which also included dinner, dancing, and a raffle. The fundraiser brought in somewhere between $130 and $200 for Cultural Connection, Inc., to put towards the bandshell’s upkeep, said Paul Ciccotelli, Secretary of the Onset Bay Association.
Ciccotelli said the night was originally supposed to be a casino night, but, given Massachusetts’ new, intricate laws around gambling – which include casino nights – Ciccotelli said he had to come up with another plan.
“It just got needlessly complicated, so we said, ‘Forget this,’” Ciccotelli said. “Carolee and John Salerno graciously volunteered – Carolee, being the impresario she is, said, ‘Why don’t you just do a Frank Sinatra night?’”
Ciccotelli was impressed with Dutra’s impression of Sinatra.
“I am certainly no Frank Sinatra aficionado, but I am of Italian descent, and every Sunday, at my house, Frank Sinatra would be playing,” Ciccotelli said. “[Dutra] does seem to pull it off personality-wise incredibly.”
Since the organization began as the Bandshell Alliance last year, Ciccotelli it has raised a total of $3,179. If the organization can raise $4,000, it can get a matching grant to be put towards the bandshell. Ciccotelli said he wants to put all this information into the online “cloud.”
“Anyone can see how much we are bringing in, to make it as transparent as possible,” Ciccotelli said.
