Garden Club spruces up Depot Crossing
The roadways around town being spruced up thanks to the efforts of the Wareham Garden Club.
In early April, members began planting flowers and shrubbery on the islands at the intersection of Depot Street and Minot Avenue. The Depot Crossing Island project is the latest effort by Garden Club in its mission of civic beautification.
The Garden Club’s commitment to civic beautification sparked the project last fall. Members began planting at the site in early April, after removing the dying flowers and shrubbery that used to grow there.
The project is coming up roses, according to Garden Club member Robin Murphy.
The old landscaping was planted more than 20 years ago and was in need of some sprucing up, Murphy said.
“It’s a very visible intersection,” Murphy pointed out. “It takes a lot of abuse.”
Murphy said the plants formerly on the islands were harmed by snow plows and unpredictable New England weather.
The members will work with Municipal Maintenance to preserve the new landscaping in addition to choosing plants that can better weather the elements, Murphy said.
Many of the flowers have already taken root and Murphy said the garden is still growing. The members are in the process of purchasing additional flowers to plant on the islands.
