Gardens Ashore tour to feature six gardens, each with a personal touch

Jun 25, 2012

Catch coastal gardens in bloom this weekend during the Wareham Garden Club's annual Gardens Ashore tour.

The garden tour, which is scheduled for Friday, June 29, and Saturday, June 30, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on both days, is a fundraiser for the club, which awards a yearly scholarship to a graduating senior in the area, hosts educational programs, and beautifies several public areas in town, including the traffic islands at Depot Street and the area surrounding the lighthouses at the entrance to Wareham Village.

This year's tour will take participants to three gardens in Onset and three on Great Neck in Wareham. Each garden will feature a large floral design in addition to the gardening masterpieces of each homeowner.

"They'll all be different. They'll all be unique," Joyce Holster, a Garden Club member and one of the organizers of the tour, said of the floral displays. "They'll be elaborate."

The six gardens were chosen by Garden Club members who looked for gardens that had many points of interest.

One of those gardens encompasses Brenda Curry-McKeon's Salt Marsh Lane property.

"There was nothing here when we bought it," said Curry-McKeon as she scanned the acre of land featuring many focal points.

Curry-McKeon has been gardening for 20 years. Her husband, Dennis, loved to see what she would do with the land, which the couple purchased in 2000 and began gardening upon approximately two years later.

The property now features several smaller gardens, each unique, that tie in to the garden as a whole.

"It pulls your eye along," Curry-McKeon said of the garden.

One of those smaller gardens is particularly special. Prominently displayed as one walks around the property is a tribute to Dennis, who died suddenly five years ago. The garden features violets and forget-me-nots, among other blooming flowers. Curry-McKeon will display a photo of Dennis in the memorial garden during the tour.

Dennis "would have loved to have this garden on tour," she said.

Curry-McKeon's sister Debra Sones has been helping with the garden. The garden boasts various combinations of color through the use of flowers and different types of greenery.

Curry-McKeon and Sones were inspired by Asian countries in creating the garden. Curry-McKeon explained that the garden has "Asian flair," right down to the Japanese sand garden behind the house.

"It's extremely much an art form," Holster said of gardening, noting that Curry-Mckeon "has an amazing knack for tucking little things away," including decorations and other surprises that hang from trees and show up elsewhere in the garden.

And that's just a little bit of what participants can expect on the tour.

Tickets for the Gardens Ashore Coastal Garden Tour can be purchased at Buzzards Bay Productions, located at 3065 Cranberry Highway in East Wareham, for $22 on the days of the tour. Advanced tickets are available for $18 at Sail Away Boutique on Main Street and the Old Company Store on Elm Street.

"Garden Tours really inspire people," Holster said in encouraging all to attend. "It's a little exercise, a lot of beauty."

The Garden Club meets on the second Thursday of every month at 9:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church Fellowship Hall, 11 Gibbs Ave.
