Gatemen begin season with 10-inning home opener
The Wareham Gatemen began the 2011 season Friday with an Opening Day ceremony at Spinney Field and a 10-inning nail biter against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
Pitcher Justin Amlung (Louisville) began the game with a three up, three down inning.
Infielder William Carmona (Stony Brook), batting second for the Gatemen, knocked one out of the park for the first run of the game.
The Harbor Hawks tied the game in the 4th and led the Gatemen 3-2 in the 6th. The Gatemen tied the score in the 8th and no team scored in the 9th, causing the game to go into extra innings. The Harbor Hawks scored a run in the 10th, however, and the Gatemen could not bounce back. The final score was 4-3.
Fans filled Spillane, many donning red shirts not just to support the Gatemen, but to honor military personnel across the globe for the Cape Cod Baseball League's "Red Shirt Friday."
The game was called by Boston Red Sox public announcer Carl Beane, who has also announced the last few Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star games at Fenway Park.
The Opening Day festivities featured scores of Wareham Little League and Babe Ruth players, the Wareham Police and Wareham High School color guards, and a performance of the National Anthem by "The Singing Trooper," State Trooper Dan Clark.
