Gatemen fall to Chatham, 4-0, in home opener
The Wareham Gatemen got off to a rough start on Wednesday, losing their home opener to the Chatham Anglers, 4-0.
The bats were pretty quiet at Spillane Field and the game remained scoreless until the 8th inning.
Gatemen starting pitcher Sean Newcomb of the University of Hartford was relieved by Dillon Ortmon of Auburn University in the 8th, and Connor Joe of the Anglers and the University of San Diego scored after hitting a double and being driven home by another double from Jimmy Pickens of Michigan State.
Pickens made it to third after a hit from Andrew Murray of Georgia Tech, and the Gatemen switched up their pitching again, bringing in Christopher Huffman of James Madison University.
Huffman came into the game with the bases loaded and walked the first batter he faced bring the score to 2-0 for Chatham.
The Gatemen pulled out a double play, but didn't get out of the inning without the Anglers scoring two more runs, bringing the score to 4-0.
The Gatemen brought Ryan Riga of Ohio State University in to pitch in the 9th, and although he fended off further runs from the Anglers, the Gatemen weren't able to get on the board.
Assistant Coach Ted Regan said that the game gave a number of pitchers a chance to "get the cobwebs out, get the butterflies out."
The Gatemen are missing a sizable portion of their roster, with 11 players still wrapped up in college ball because of the College World Series.
Regan wasn't making any excuses.
"It is what it is. We've got our players here," he said. "We just didn't square the ball up too well tonight."
Regan said that the batters were thrown by fastballs.
"We just didn't swing the bat that well, but we'll get better," he added. "Our timing was off on the fastball."
The Gatemen will face the Hyannis Harbor Hawks on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Spillane Field.
