Gatemen get better in second full week
After going 1-5 in the first full week of play, the Wareham Gatemen (4-8) have turned things around a bit, going 3-3 since last Wednesday.
The Gatemen lost a nail-biter to Falmouth last Wednesday by a score of 5-4, but bounced back with two straight wins Thursday at Cotuit and Friday at Hyannis.
The 8-3 win at Cotuit snapped a five-game losing streak for the Gatemen. In the contest, the Gatmen banged out 15 hits in all, with starting pitcher Brock Hartson picking up the win after pitching six strong innings, giving up three runs and striking out seven. Third baseman Andrew Knizner went 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI, while shortstop Blake Lacey went 2-for-5 with four RBIs.
Wareham followed that win with another win at Hyannis against the Harbor Hawks by a score of 7-5. Andrew Zapata picked up the win in relief for the Gatemen after pitching one-and-a-third innings of hitless, scoreless baseball. Third baseman Andrew Knizner continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Following the two wins, the Gatemen dropped two straight, with a 7-0 loss at Orleans on Saturday and a 4-2 loss in the first half of a home doubleheader against Chatham on Sunday.
They did, however, respond to the losses with a win Sunday night in the back half of the doubleheader with a 7-6 win over Chatham.
Starting pitcher Drew Harrington got the win after going five innings strong, as he gave up only one run on three hits.
A pinch-hit, solo home run in the sixth inning by Blair Brett put the Gatemen up 7-3, which proved to be the difference for the Gatemen, as their bullpen gave up three more runs before reliever Scott Effross was able to close it out for the save.
Head Coach Cooper Farris commended the job of Harrington and said his performance was one of the keys to the win.
“Drew did a great job tonight,” Farris said. “He just got here and has been taking it all in. I thought he pounded the zone pretty good and his breaking ball was outstanding.
“We need to minimize our pitch counts and see if we can extend these guys deeper into the ballgame. It’ll make it a lot easier on the bullpen if we can get good innings like we did tonight from Drew.”
