Gatemen to send six players to All-Star game
Wareham Gatemen All-Star Griffin Roberts started the summer as one of the top closers in the country, but has since emerged as one of the best starters in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Roberts, and five other Gatemen, is set to participate in the league’s All-Star Game scheduled at Spillane Field on July 22. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m.
Roberts’ selection followed what was the most prominent performance from a Gatemen starter to date. On July 15, he pitched six shutout innings as Wareham knocked off Cotuit, 1-0, at Lowell Park. Roberts fired home just 60 pitches over the six frames, 42 of which were strikes.
Joining Roberts on the game’s roster will be: pitcher Justin Montgomery, catcher MacIver Willy, pitcher Tanner Dodson, infielder Kyle Kasser and left fielder John Toppa. Tristan Pompey will represent the Gatemen in a home run hitting contest before the nationally-televised game, which follows an afternoon’s worth of activities for fans.
Gates open at 2 p.m. with autograph sessions following at 2:40 p.m. for east and west division pitchers. Autograph sessions for west division position players takes place at 3:25 p.m., east position players will sign autographs at 4:15 p.m.
The home run hitting contest is scheduled from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
