Gateway Tavern donates $7,000 from charity golf tournament to high school library
Wareham High School librarian Judith DeBonise already knows how she'll be spending a $7,250 donation to the library.
She'll create a presentation space with new technology for teachers and students to showcase material and add new print and research materials to the library's shelves.
The money was raised by local businesses that sponsored holes and golf carts during the Gateway Tavern's 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, held in October.
Gateway Tavern owner Joe Sauro presented Wareham High School with a check for the funds raised on November 14.
"The students are thankful," said DeBonise. "They're excited about the changes."
The library has been working to beef up its media center with new technology.
"We're going to really move this media center into the 21st century," said Wareham High School Principal Scott Palladino.
It was the second time that Gateway Tavern donated the tournament's proceeds to the school's library. In 2009, the restaurant donated $6,500.
"It was so well-received that we figured we'd keep [the library] as our stand-by charity, Sauro said.
DeBonise, who also works at the Gateway, noted that donations to the library benefit the school as a whole. Teachers frequently bring their classes to the library for work on projects. The computers, tables, and chairs purchased with the restaurant's last donation have enhanced classroom instruction, she said.
"In the last two years, the library has gone through quite a transition," DeBonise said.
Though the tournament is a lot of work to put on, Sauro said he is happy that the Gateway Tavern, in conjunction with all the local businesses that sponsored the tournament, were able to help.
The donation "makes it all worthwhile," Sauro said.
